The Rock Hall Reconsidered Project: Round 6 Results

After the Round 5 results were revealed, each nomination committee member was asked to compile another list of 40 currently-eligible artists to create the Round 5 ballot. With the addition of newly-eligible artists for the Class of 1987 (who released their first record in 1961) to the mix. As a result, the following artists have been inducted into the Rock Hall Reconsidered Project and thus completes our inaugural Class of 1987:

  • Otis Redding
  • The Beach Boys
  • The Ronettes
  • The Temptations

The following artist(s) received less than 5% of the total vote this round and they will be taken off the Round 7 Ballot:

  • Esther Phillips
  • The Dominoes

The other 34 artists who did not receive induction this round will automatically be nominated in Round 7. Next week, we will consider artists eligible for the Class of 1988 (artists who released their first record in 1962).

Artists Who Were Considered by the Committee but Ultimately Didn’t Receive Enough Votes to Appear on the Round Five Ballot: Ben E. King, Big Jay McNeely, Celia Cruz, Chet Baker, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Del Shannon, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Frankie Valli, Freddie King, Gene Pitney, Glen Campbell, Harry Belafonte, Ivory Joe Hunter, Joe Tex, Louis Armstrong, Nancy Sinatra, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Peggy Lee, Roger Miller. Screaming Lord Sutch, Sun Ra, The Blossoms, The Crystals, The Dells, The Marvelettes, The Ventures, Waylon Jennings, Willie Dixon

Round 7 Induction Process Updates:

With two rounds of voting with the expanded electorate concluded, the Nomination Committee has made two observations:

1. It is currently too difficult for performers to get enough votes to earn induction.

2. Performers that weren't eligible in the initial year of the project (1960) don't have enough opportunities to qualify for the ballot due to a lack of ballot space.

These observations are not a reflection of any decisions made by voters or the Nomination Committee, but merely a reflection of the large number of worthy performers that are currently eligible for the project and those that will be eligible in upcoming rounds.

Our observations are that the processes need to be altered in order to give more performers the opportunity to gain nomination and, potentially, induction. Several options for improving the current process to address these two issues were discussed and while we are currently ruling out the options of decreasing the number of nominees on each ballot or limiting the number of rounds of eligibility for each performer, we have decided to make the following changes, effective starting in Round 7 (next round):

1. Voters will be allowed to vote for up to 15 nominees on each round's 40 nominee ballot.

2. Performers must appear on 15.00% or more of all cast ballots to automatically be re-nominated to the next round's ballot (assuming that they are still in their 10 rounds of eligibility).

3. Performers that fail to reach the 15.00% threshold will be eligible for re-nomination by the Nomination Committee, so long as they are still within their 10 rounds of eligibility.

4. Performers that finish below 5.00% of all cast ballots will no longer be disqualified from nomination to the Performers Ballot. This change is retroactively effective, meaning that Chuck Willis will be eligible again for re-nomination, as will any performers finishing below the 5% threshold on the Round 6 ballot.
